Essential Apps for South Asians Living in the UK — 2026 Edition

9 min read May 2026Pravasi Editorial

From getting a bank account on day one without any UK documents, to sending money home at the best rates, finding South Asian food, navigating public transport, and accessing NHS care — these are the apps that actually make life in the UK easier in 2026.

Banking — get an account on day one without proof of address

Monzo and Starling Bank are the two best options for new arrivals. Both let you open a full UK current account with just your passport and a video selfie — no proof of address, no appointment, no waiting for a branch visit. Your card arrives within a few days. Monzo, with over 10 million customers, leads on budgeting features and has the slicker interface. Starling is better for business banking and offers fee-free ATM withdrawals worldwide. Note: as of February 2025, Starling removed interest on current account balances — you now need to move money into their separate Easy Saver (around 4% AER) to earn interest. Both are FSCS-protected and fully regulated UK banks. Once you have a UK address and your BRP, you can add a traditional account from HSBC, Barclays, or Lloyds.

Money transfer — sending money home

Wise (formerly TransferWise) remains the gold standard for sending money to India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It uses the real mid-market exchange rate with a transparent fee from just 0.48% — far better than any high street bank. For a £1,000 transfer to India, Wise typically saves £20-40 compared to banks. Remitly is a strong alternative with fast transfers and more flexible delivery options including cash pickup for recipients without bank accounts — useful for sending to rural areas. Always compare current rates on Monito.com before sending, as rates change daily. Western Union and MoneyGram are widely available but rarely offer the best rates.

Transport — getting around the UK

Citymapper covers London and all major UK cities with real-time, door-to-door routing across buses, tubes, trains, trams, and walking. It is significantly more accurate for UK public transport than Google Maps for city journeys. Google Maps is better for inter-city and rural routes. For train travel, use Trainline or the National Rail app — and always check SplitMyFare or TrainSplit before booking as splitting your journey into two cheaper tickets can save 30-50% on some routes. In London, download TfL Go for live tube, bus, and Elizabeth line information. For taxis, Uber operates across all major UK cities. Bolt is a cheaper alternative in most cities.

NHS and healthcare apps

The NHS App is essential once you are registered with a GP — use it to book appointments, order repeat prescriptions, view your health record, and access 111 online. Download it from day one and link it as soon as your GP registration is confirmed. The NHS App also stores your COVID-19 vaccination record. For private healthcare, AXA Health and Bupa apps manage policies and claims digitally. Babylon Health offers private GP video consultations if you cannot get a quick NHS appointment.

Job search apps

Indeed and LinkedIn are the two most widely used platforms in the UK. Reed, Totaljobs, and CV-Library are strong for non-tech and professional services roles. For technology roles, Otta (now merged with Welcome to the Jungle) and Hired are worth using. Set up job alerts on all platforms with your target role and location. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is complete and set to 'Open to Work' — many UK recruiters contact candidates directly through LinkedIn without posting jobs publicly.

Food delivery and South Asian groceries

Just Eat, Uber Eats, and Deliveroo are the three main delivery platforms. Just Eat has the widest selection of South Asian restaurants and local takeaways. Uber Eats is generally faster in city centres. For South Asian groceries online, Spice Kitchen and The Spice Club deliver authentic Indian ingredients nationwide. For fresh vegetables, meat, and spices, use Google Maps to find your nearest South Asian cash and carry or Indian supermarket — they are significantly cheaper than Tesco or Sainsbury's for South Asian ingredients.

Government and official apps you must have

The UKVI app lets you prove your immigration status and right to work digitally — landlords and employers will ask for this regularly. The GOV.UK app provides access to government services. The HMRC app lets you manage your tax, check your National Insurance record, and submit a self-assessment return. Download all three as soon as you arrive. The DWP app manages Universal Credit if you are eligible. If you are planning to set up a business, the Companies House app and the HMRC Making Tax Digital tools will be important.

Communication and staying connected to home

WhatsApp is the standard way South Asians in the UK communicate both locally and with family back home. For video calls, Google Meet and FaceTime are the most common. For watching South Asian content, Disney+ Hotstar carries IPL cricket, Indian films, and South Asian series. SonyLIV and Zee5 have strong Bollywood and regional content libraries. JioCinema is available in the UK and covers a lot of cricket. Netflix UK also has a growing South Asian catalogue. All major UK streaming services — BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4 — are free with a TV Licence.

Building your UK credit score from day one

Your credit score starts at zero in the UK regardless of your financial history in India or elsewhere. Start building it immediately. Register on the electoral roll as soon as possible. Get a credit builder credit card from Vanquis, Aqua, or Capital One — use it for small purchases and pay it off in full every month. Never miss a payment. Check your score for free on ClearScore (uses Equifax data), Experian, or Credit Karma. After 6 to 12 months of responsible use, your score will be sufficient to access mainstream credit products.
