Apps Every International Student Needs Before Arriving in the UK — 2026

From getting a bank account before your accommodation is confirmed, to proving your right to work, sending money home, and navigating the NHS — these are the apps that make the difference in your first weeks in the UK as a South Asian student.

Set these up before you leave home

Download and begin registration for Wise and Monzo before you leave. Wise lets you open a multi-currency account from abroad and convert money at the real mid-market exchange rate — this is significantly cheaper than using your Indian or Pakistani bank card in the UK for the first few weeks, where overseas transaction fees and poor exchange rates typically cost 3 to 5% extra per transaction. Monzo requires a UK address to complete full account opening, so start the registration and complete it with your student halls or accommodation address once confirmed. Having both services ready means you are financially functional from day one without relying on cash or costly transfers.

Banking apps that work without UK credit history or proof of address

Monzo: open a full UK current account using only your passport and a short video selfie via the app. No UK credit check, no proof of address, no appointment, no branch visit. A working UK account number and sort code are confirmed within 15 to 30 minutes. Debit card arrives in 3 to 5 working days. No monthly fees. FSCS-protected as a fully licensed UK bank. Starling Bank: identical application process, no address proof required, equally FSCS-protected. Slightly cleaner interface for those who want simplicity over features. Chase UK (by JPMorgan): available once you have a UK address — offers 1% cashback on eligible purchases for the first year, worth using for regular spending. Revolut: useful for multi-currency spending and currency exchange when travelling, but Revolut is an e-money institution rather than a bank in the UK — keep your main funds in Monzo or Starling.

UKVI app — your immigration status in your pocket

The UK Visas and Immigration app (on iOS and Android) and the gov.uk 'View and Prove' online service let you manage your eVisa and generate share codes on demand. Before starting any job, your employer must verify your right to work using a share code you generate here — it takes under a minute. Your landlord will also ask for this when you apply to rent privately. Your university will periodically check your immigration status. Keep your UKVI account login credentials saved securely — losing access to your UKVI account can delay your right-to-work checks significantly. If you have a new passport, update your UKVI account immediately so your eVisa is linked to your current document.

NHS App — download and register on your first week

Download the NHS App (iOS and Android) and create an account as soon as you have a UK address and are registered with a GP surgery. Once registered, link the app to your NHS records using your NHS number. The NHS App lets you book and manage GP appointments, order repeat prescriptions, view your health records and test results, see your vaccination history including COVID-19 certificates (still required by some employers and for travel), and access the 111 online service for non-emergency health advice. As a student paying the Immigration Health Surcharge, you are entitled to full NHS care — the NHS App is how you access most of it without waiting on the phone.

Transport apps — getting around efficiently

Citymapper: the best routing app for UK cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, and Bristol. More accurate than Google Maps for public transport, integrates real-time bus and tube data, and shows live crowding levels. Essential in London. TfL Go: specifically for London — shows live tube, bus, and Elizabeth Line arrivals, lets you top up your Oyster card and contactless travel spending. Trainline or National Rail app: for journeys between cities. Before buying any train ticket, check SplitMyFare.com — splitting a long journey into two connecting tickets at a break point can save 20 to 50% on many routes. Bolt and Uber: both operate in most UK cities; Bolt is typically 10 to 20% cheaper than Uber in most cities outside London.

Job search apps — start building your presence from day one

LinkedIn: complete your profile with a professional photo and full education and experience history before you arrive. Set your location to your UK university city. Many UK employers and recruiters find candidates directly through LinkedIn searches rather than advertising roles — your profile visibility matters from your first week. Prospects app (prospects.ac.uk): the UK's most comprehensive graduate jobs board — specifically lists structured graduate schemes, internships, and placements from employers who actively recruit from UK universities. Indeed: set up job alerts for your target role and location — the most widely used job board across all sectors in the UK. Handshake: used by most UK universities to share employer-exclusive job listings with their students — check whether your university uses it and create an account immediately.

Money transfer apps — sending money home without losing on exchange

Wise: the standard for sending money from the UK to India (supports IMPS and UPI), Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Uses the real mid-market exchange rate with fees from 0.48% — typically saves £20 to £40 per £1,000 transferred compared to high street banks. Remitly: strong for urgent transfers to Pakistan and Bangladesh, with express delivery within hours. Always compare the rate on Monito.com before sending amounts above £500 — rates change daily and the difference between providers on a £1,000 transfer can be £30 to £50. Never use your UK bank's international wire service — the exchange rate margins are typically 3 to 5%, which on regular transfers to family adds up to hundreds of pounds per year.

Student discount apps — save on everyday spending

Student Beans and UNiDAYS are both free apps that give you access to student discounts at hundreds of UK retailers, restaurants, and services. Verify your student status once with your university email address and access discounts on ASOS, Apple education pricing, Amazon Prime Student (free for 6 months then 50% off), Spotify, Adobe Creative Cloud, and many others. TOTUM (the official NUS card app) is required for some physical in-store discounts. Deliveroo, Just Eat, and Uber Eats all offer periodic student discount codes through Student Beans and UNiDAYS — check before every order. The cumulative savings from student discounts across a full academic year can run into hundreds of pounds.
